Happy Fourth of July =D Sister's Red Book review

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY, PEEPS!!!!!

Yeah ^-^ It took me like 2 minutes to do, um, that ^ so I'm going to copy and paste my book review off goodreads. Sorry, I'm a lazy butt. But I'll add onto it.

Sisters Red- Jackson Pearce
(Cool cover, right? I thought so)

This book had an epic chance to fail; there were only three main characters that were consistants in the story, and that means you have less wiggle room with characters. Throw in the fact that they're all working toward the same goal and that two of them think the same way, and you're bound to get a boring story.

This book, however, stayed consistantly interesting. I loved all the main characters, different as they may be, and in this case I actually liked the sqitch perspective; Ms. Pierce handled it very well. To be honest, I expected it to be fairytale like. I was (obliviously) suprised to see it was a modern retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, in a way, though I shouldn't have been- it's even called Sister's red. So this would be Red Riding Hood if Red had a sister she was willing to die for to protect and a hot partner to help her take out the werewolves. I normally dislike seeing my Lycans thrown in a bad light, but they were delightful bad guys and I didn't really mind all that much. The way they distinguished different packs was very interesting.

The only reason this didn't get a [8] star was because part of it was supposed to be a big shocker and I guessed it within the first 30 pages. So the end was kind of 'mleh' for me, but through no real fault of the authors. It just didn't surprise me like it was designed to.

However, it was a very interesting read =) And, in case you were wondering, Scarlett was a total bad@$$ Highly recomended

Anyways, that's pretty much all I did today besides get some killer pictures of fireworks I'm too lazy to upload >.< I have a headache, probably from watching things explode right in my face. Very intertaining, but painful.

For those of you who still give a monkey's uncle what I'm writing and working on, I'm still running strong with Frozen =) 54k now. I hope to finish it by summer, and it will be the first book I've ever finished that isn't remotely Darkest Ebony related <3 I'm so happy with it. I love Camilla ^-^ I'll probably post a few excerpts soon, just for the heck of it.

Oh, and while I'm on my blog anyways, I have a new project I'm brooding over ^-^"' I'm still finishing Frozen and probably Remember (My demon project, if you... recall XD) first, but I have a new idea playing about. I think it's going to be called Specter. I'll let your imaginations handle the rest ;)

...Mleh. It was kind of straight out.

Plot: It was very...deep. This is going to make me sound more like a moron than usual, but usually I read light books. You know, glopping in the dark and/or gooey romance with lots of werewolves and violence. This book inspired much, much more thought. It was a little hard to follow sometimes, but really good.

Character names: Not too shabby. Nothing really special, but nothing that would inspire a WTF reaction. As a matter of fact, I really like the name Auden.

Cover: I thought it was interesting. Not the most amazing thing ever, but it certainly caught my attention. I saw some other girl reading it a while ago and was jealous- I was reading The Giver for school.

Setting: It was good in some places, poor in others. She didn't do a bad job at explaining it, it just wasn't all that interesting or original, you know?

Writing Style: It was amazing. Well, kind of. The language was amazing. She just spend SO long using that amazing language that we didn't actually get anything important until about 30 pages into the book. Bleh.

Imagery and attention to detail: Eeeeh, pretty good. She had a lot of detail that sounded like it was interesting. It would've been if she actually explained what any of it was. She talked about "Linking in" all the time, but never actually tells the reader what exactly linking in was, even though it was a huge deal for them. I got the impression it was facebook meets world of warcraft meets the news. Fasinating, but I wish she went more into explaining what it was.

Title: It fits really well, actually. It's a little creepy and unusual before you read the book, but it just clicks afterwards.

Is it worth the read?: Yeah, I'd say so =) I mean, it's not the most amazing thing ever, but it's certainly worth the read.

Pacing: The pacing was terrible. No offense to the author, but it was. It took a nice long time for us to get into the real meat of the story, and afterwards it really seemed to drag anyways.

I know T-T I've been SOOOO lazy. I was going to do Thusday excerpt this week, but I had a bajillion pounds of makeup work. I keep getting sick.
On the somewhat bright side, I've got 64k in Deadly Design =) I'm going to try to finish it by mid-april. Then I'll be back. Maybe I'll even start informing people I have a blog.... *shrugs*
You know what I discovered the other day? I had 44 views. Because people were going on google and clicking on pictures of Ian Somerhalder that were on my blog. In my opinion, that's awesome. So yeah *nods*
Now I'm rambling... Shoot.
Ok. Well, I kindof have a couple of book reviews. Unfortunately, none of them are glowing or even in the right format. But hey, it's something, right?

Once in a full moon

Honestly, this review is going to be mean.
And I'm just a little bias- When I read this, I was actually searching for flaws. Turns out, they were pretty easy to find.

I actually can't believe this got published. Rather than ranting about every little thing that was bad, I'm just going to list the good things about this book and what I learned.

-I learned that, if you're a bestseller, they'll publish anything else you write. Even if it's absolute crap.
-The main character had a thing for fingerless gloves. Awesome
-The characters stayed true to themselves.
-I learned that your editor doesn't have to read it before it gets published

That's it. I wish I could say it was great, because I wanted to. I read this because it was a werewolf book by a bestselling author, and therefore would be competition if I were to ever get published. I'm not quite pleased to say this book wouldn't be competition for a dead bug glued to a page.
For a start, the author had a knack for making things up. She completely ignores this guy, then when he shows up out of nowhere for no apparent reason and saves her life by doing pretty much nothing, she's suddenly been allured by him for forever. The dialogue was horriffic, and details she added didn't match up to what she said at the begging in of the book. The main character had more or less no flaws (you know, other than being a kissup and too freaking perfect) and the plot in general was so predictable. And the big thing that was supposed to be shocking? They dropped the suspense in less than five pages and did nothing with it. The end was seriously weak and cliche.

To be honest, I really only finished this book so I could say with complete certainty that this was one of the most rediculous books I've ever read.
Would I reccomend reading it? Only if you want to laugh your butt off at the stupidity. I'm almost tempted to reread Vampire Kisses- I really liked that one, but it makes me wonder if I just didn't notice how awful it was.
But hey. On the bright side, the cover's pretty.

From a writer's standpoint- it wasn't all that
From a reader's standpoint- it was awesome.

Allow me to explain ~Insert some dramatic gesture here~... Actually, I don't know how to explain, really, so I'm making a pros and cons list.


-Pros-

-The Story line was pretty good.
-The characters were well done, and at times very funny (though not my personal favorite of sardonic AND funny)
-Some of the descriptions were pretty good.
-It had some original moments

-Cons-

-The writer often used dialogue where imagery and thought would've surficed. Either that or a lot of dialogue was redundant.
-PREDICTABLE. Not cliche, really, but you saw everything coming from miles away. She just made the big shockers obvious from the start. No red herrings either. Juuuuuust preditable.
-It was way too fast in some places and dragged in others.
-The writer skipped months. In some cases, this is appropriate, but not during action-packed time.
-Some facts didn't match up. And I mean, they really didn't match up. For example, in the begining of the book it says she's been in this one class at school for months. Then it says it's september, meaning she started school around the begining of summer. Hence the statement "some facts don't match up".

In general, though, it wasn't a bad book. If I wasn't getting better at picking out good litterature, I would've been all over this. But, from a bitter unpublished girl's standpoint, the writing wasn't all that great. So the verdict is a dead even 5. Or three stars.



Ok... well, I know I said they weren't glowing, but that made me too sad. So I'm going to put a glowing one. Drum roll.....

Ok, so I'm going to repeat what I said earlier just a bit.
If you don't read this series, you're stupid. Period.

Note to the crappy authors of the world: THIS is how you're supposed to write. I am totally in love with this series. Mercy's the most kick@$$ MC I've ever come across and there aren't words to describe how awesome Adam is ;)
So... yeah. Read Moon Called, then Blood Bound, then Iron Kissed, then Bone Crossed, then Silver Borne, and then read this. Or I'll eat you 0-0

Pacing: I'm not going to lie; it dragged a lot. It would've been hard not to drag in some places though; she repeated the same day 7 times. The second one was almost exactly like the first, so it was pretty much 100 pages of pointlessness. But, in general, it wasn't too bad.

Characters: They were pretty great =) Especially Kent. Rob was a scum-bag though. *mutters*

Elody was the only interesting name; everyone else had the same names you use for side characters you're too lazy to actually put thought into. You may shoot me for now complaining about the names being too normal after I whined about Peitr (Who I totally love soooooo much ;), Patch (Who I love almost as much as Peitr) and Lend (Who I love equally to Pietr ^-^) Soooooory.

Ok, few thing's to say before I start this book review.

1.) I started reading this at 11 pm because I was bored and finished around 3. Forgive me if some details are fuzzy.

2.) This is way out of my genre. For one THERE ARE NO WEREWOLVES. OMG. Nor even a mention of werewolves ;( Shame. But, anyways, the last book that was general fiction (which is what I'm calling this 0-0) without being prompted by the school system was like The Wolf Boy or something and I only read it because I thought it was about werewolves. It wasnt. Not even close. It was about an eight year old kid with a box of letters and a weird neighbor. Not my piece of cake ^-^ Now, if weird neighbor had been a werewolf and tried to bite him? THAT would've been cool. AHHH, MAD EIGHT YEAR OLD WEREWOLF IS GOING TO EAT YOU AND BUY PLANE TICKETS TO LONDON SO HE CAN BE AMERICAN KID WEREWOLF IN LONDON AHHHH. Yep. Very epic the way I wrote it ;) Better than ze kid with the box of letters, thank you very much *takes a bow*

3.) Take it easy on me if the review sucks. I'm used to reviewing Paranormal ;)

4.) I read this beacause I heard it was good and wanted to know how the writer would handle it; I had no idea how you'd write something like this and thought it would be a good idea to learn.

Actually, I don't like the pitch. It seems more like they're tryign to sell you the book or see the morals in it (especially at the end, ugh) rather than focusing on the intricate plot.

Cover: I thought it was cool. It certainly portrayed the book, in it's own way. Though she's fighting to prove that BESTSELLING AUTHORS CAN'T USE CAPITAL LETTERS ON THEIR COVERS OMG. Why can't they just capitalize that little I and prove they know their grammer? It bothers me to no end.

Is it worth the read?: Yes, definitely. If not for the plot, read it for the way she wrote it. I mean, how would you have written a book about someone debating whether to stay or move on? It would be a short story, not a book. So I was curious how she'd write it, and I feel like I can be just a bit of a better writer now that I understand. It's a good eye opener too, and the depth she goes into is amazing. And the characters are so, so original. So yes, I stongly reccomend you read it =)

Plot: Actually, it was pretty good. Werewolves totally WEREN'T the main focus, but it was a pretty good story anyways ;) There, that was the end of the minimal spoilers. PIETR IS A WEREWOLF. If you didn't happen to guess from the wolves in the first chapter and the full freaking moon on the cover. Sorry, that was bitter. I took a math midterm today.

Pacing: The pacing was excelent =) Some places were a little quick, but there wasnt really a moment I'd call dull

Character names: I felt it was important to add this, because I keep choosing books with WTH names lately. In general, the names were pretty good. I just wish she hadn't maimed the name Peter so it was spelled Pietr. At least she recognised it was a dumb spelling though...

Originality: It was VERY original. This is got to be the first werewolf book I've read that didn't focus on mah homies. And it involved the Rusian Mafia, which I haven't had the pleasure to stumble across yet. So yep, A+ for 13 to Life on Originality

Cover: Meh, it's not bad. Personally, I think I could do better, but it actually displays a scene (you know, minus the giant hovering eye) so it's cool.

Setting: Pretty good =) She didn't really describe the places we were in, but all the important ones were pretty vivid. Definitely a plus.

Writing Style: Pretty good. It was captivating while reading, but when you went back she was definitely a fan of run on sentences. There were places where it got a little hard to understand what she was talking about too.

Is it worth the read: Yeah, I think so. It's not super-paranormal, but it was a good read and you'll LUFF Pietr. If his name doesnt annoy you to the point where you slap him. I'll definitely be reading the next book, which comes out Febuary 15th.

For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.
But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.
For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life.

Plot: Not the Twilight-knock-off regurgitate I expected. I actually couldn't put it down *rubs back of head*

Pacing: It was ok. It stayed interesting, but Becca had a thing for putting Patch in every scene. You know how you should have some control and give the MC time without the guy they're supposed to fall in love with? Becca forgot that part.

Characters: They were delightful =) Especially Patch *huggles* Nora was ok too, I guess... hmm.

Character names: GAH, NO. THE NEW RULE OF WRITING IS 'THOUGH SHALL NOT NAME THEIR MC AFTER THEIR DEAD DOG". Ok, that was mean, sorry Patch. But your name sucks. Nora's and Vee's aren't much better.

Cover: I LOVE it <3 It's totally NOT what I think Patch looks like, but it's a superfreaking awesome none the less. If only authors could remember capitalization on their covers. First twilight, now this. CAPITILIZATION, PEEPS

I actually really liked it =) Patch was AWESOME (once you got past his stupid name. She might have been better off with Rover) and it was a good laugh. Not something you need to drop everything and go buy, but it's certainly worth the read.
